A state-level record was just broken after a Lafayette-based attorney showed up at the Louisiana Lottery’s headquarters on the morning of December 12th, 2017 to claim a $191.1 million Powerball jackpot on the behalf of his clients.
The single winning ticket was purchased a family who prefers privacy and wishes to remain anonymous. The group used the name, 292 Family Partnership, to be used as the official winner. The family opted for the one time lump sum payment worth approximately $119,492, 685 before taxes. The jackpot in question was from the October 25th Powerball drawing.
Not only is the prize the biggest lottery in the state of Louisiana’s history, it’s also the single largest prize ever won through one ticket in the Powerball’s 26 year history.
Through a prepared statement, the lucky family says, “We are absolutely elated that we won. We are a quite family and prefer not to be treated as celebrities.” They claim to use the money to continue to travel and upgrade their current circumstances. The family also offers words of encouragement for fellow lottery players by saying, “For those who say you’ll never win, well never was on October 25th!”
The family’s chosen attorney was Jean C. Breaux Jr., who had said that his clients were regular players of the Powerball lottery, and that they made sure to keep copies of every single Powerball ticket in case a mistake was made or winning numbers were overlooked.
The individual within the family who purchased the ticket had even accidentally taken the winning ticket offshore in a helicopter. The winner checked a few of the purchased tickets on his phone, and didn’t get to checking the winning ticket numbers until two members of the family spoke on the phone.
It appears that the winners were part of a partnership, and each had held a long-standing agreement that should any member of the lottery pool strike it big, that they would share the winnings with the other participants. The total amount won after federal and state taxes ended up amounting to exactly $83,644,879. The winning members claim that they will “partially retire.”
Lottery President Rose Hudson claimed it was a “landmark day” when the partnership stepped forward to claim their record-breaking jackpot. The Lottery President when on to say that, “One of the best parts of our job is getting to hear Louisiana winner’s stories and share in their life-changing experiences. We are pleased to welcome these new winners to the Lottery’s Powerball millionaires club which is now over 70 strong!”
The landmark victory and its winning ticket were sold at a Brownie’s store, specifically located at 150 West Maple in Eunice, Louisiana. Brownie’s is a retail store that received a $25,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The owner of the lucky Brownie’s store, Jeffery Duplechin, has come and out and said that he plans to use the bonus money to take his family out on a small vacation.
More specifically, Duplechin said about the win that, “I’m very excited to put Eunice on the map with this big win!” And as it turns out, Duplechin wasn’t exactly surprised at the record-breaking ticket being sold at his place, seeing as how a number of lucky tickets have found their way to the location in the past.
With that said, if you’re playing the Powerball, or any American lottery for that matter, try to find a ticket agent in Eunice, Louisiana!
The winning Powerball ticket for this special October 25th drawing were: 18-22-29-54-57, with the lucky Powerball number being 8.
With this win in the bag, the number of winning jackpot tickets sold in Louisiana now comes to 16, ever since the Louisiana joined the Lottery back in 1995. Before this, a winning jackpot ticket for the Powerball lottery was sold in May of 2013 in Louisiana.
This drawing is the record breaker for the state of Louisiana, and beats out the previous record-holder of $97 million, which was won in the Powerball jackpot from the January 16th, 2008 drawing, which was won by a man from Metairie, Louisiana.
